Fly Away With Me: Travel Tips & Tricks

When I first started traveling for work I was in awe of the seemingly perfect travelers around me. You know them; they're the ever efficient people who make security look like a breeze and have everything organized for quick on-the-go access. The men knew how to fold their suit jacket so that it didn't get any unwanted creases in it. The women, very often in heels, made lifting a 35 lb roller bag into the overhead bin look easy, as if I wasn't in awe enough that they had managed to fit EVERYTHING they needed for the next week in a small bag. But the biggest giveaway was that they don't look miserable. It didn't matter if the flight was delayed for the third time or if the only seat left on the Southwest plane was next to a crying child, they always looked like were heading to Sunday brunch rather than a three hour non-stop flight to LAX. 

Flash forward to now and it's been two years. For the better part of the past two years, I have been traveling each week. I have mastered the art of quickly going through security but that is more due to practice than anything else. No don't get me wrong, there are some definite perks to living the traveling lifestyle. For example, this spring I had saved up enough travel rewards points to cover the airfare and lodging on a three week European vacation. But even that doesn't make up for the long hours sitting alone at airports. To avoid the miserable look during all this waiting, I've amassed a list of tricks that help me remain energized, alert and sane while traveling: 

Hydration! 

Everyone knows that eight 8 oz glasses of water are recommended each day, but how many of us actually abide by this? I know I didn't. But this is definitely one of the best things to follow when "listening to the doctor's orders". My favorite water to grab at the airport is Smart water. It's not because it's the current fab, but because of it's taste and the electrolytes in it. Plus, who doesn't want to drink water that helps you look like Jennifer Aniston? ;)  


Ibuprofen

I used to be vehemently against using any kind of drug, even pain relievers. But that was before I realized that there just some days where no seat is comfortable. I started taking Advil for the little aches I would get in my back and now I won't travel without it. 


Eye Drops

I think it was about a year ago that I realized how much of a lifesaver eye drops are. There were times in the past that I woke up with this dragging feeling in my eyes. I had always assumed it was because I was tired. WRONG! I was working at my clients site one morning and woke up with the dragging feeling as well as eyes that were horribly bloodshot. A co-worker of mine suggested eye drops for the redness and BOOM a miracle. Okay, so many the world miracle is too strong, but it was enough of an awesome feeling to realize that the dragging feeling was not me being tired, but rather my eyes being dry from staring at the computer all day. So now I always carry a bottle with me, preferably Visine Advanced for it's use as a redness and irritation relief.



Trench coat

I don't know about you, but I am always freezing! In airports, restaurants, hospitals, everywhere and really any place that I can not directly control the A/C. It did not take long for me to realize that I couldn't go around shivering but needed to find a solution. Carrying a blanket around with me did not make sense and a pashmina was not big enough. A trench coat was  a perfect fix because nobody looks at you for carrying around a trench coat. I found one very similar to this one. It has a removable hood and a detachable inner lining. I used mine on my vacation in Europe; added the hood when it was raining and added/removed the lining depending on the temperature. AND a very big plus is that it looks so stylish, such as this one on Olivia Palermo. 




Eye mask

Despite best laid plans, there are sometimes you just cannot avoid red eye flights or ones that are scheduled to leave before most people have even woken up (i.e. 5:00am). Flight attendants usually dim the cabin lights on these early/late flights but even that's not enough if the person next to you has chosen to read a book rather than act like a reasonable person and get a little shut eye. Trust me, it's a MUST!



Wall charger for cellphone

I feel that this one is pretty much a given, but i'm always surprised on the number of times I hear people say, "My phone is dead" at the airport. The problem is that a lot of people remember to pack their chargers, but leave them in their checked luggage which makes charging your phone on your layover pretty much impossible. Word to the wise: pack it in your carry-on.



 Headphones (especially ones with a mouthpiece)

It only took one long flight with nothing to and nothing to listen to for me to remember to always pack a pair of headphones. Even if you are intending to sleep on the plane, headphones help while traveling. You can keep your hands free while moving throughout the terminal while on a phone call, you can block out the 5-year-old who just really hasn't learned volume control and you can use them to watch Netflix for those times that you misread your itinerary and have a three hour layover, not the 30 minutes like you originally thought. 



Nutrition

I know a lot of young moms who find this as a no-brainer. They're used to children who say that they are not hungry when you're next to the cafe but surely enough are STARVING 10 minutes later when there is nothing in sight. For adults it is less about being able to predict if and when we're hungry but how to eat healthily on the road when there are nothing but fast food joints around. I try to always carry a healthy alternative with me such as nuts or dried fruit, but there are times when I've just run out of snacks and didn't realize it. If this happens at the airport, I head straight to a Hudson News Stand. These places aren't only good for books and magazines, but they have a wide assortment of granola bars, nuts and other low fat snacks. Nature Valley bars are always a go-to for the flavor and the nutritional factors. Snacks that are high in protein are generally a good grab as protein helps you stay fuller longer, or until you have time to stop for a real meal.


A good read

Each time I finish a really good book, I silently thank my parents for instilling in my sisters and me a passion for reading. This passion has helped so much when traveling. A book that I LOVE and have just finished is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. My tip when finding something to read is to find a book that is about another passion of yours, such as fashion, sports, entertainment. There are so many good books out there just waiting to be read. 



A Starbucks card

So this one is more of a personal preference than anything else. For coffee lovers out there, you'll know why it's here. There is almost ALWAYS one nearby and because they are such a large company with standard recipes, you don't have to worry about not liking the drink you ordered. For those of you who who feel that a shot of expresso just isn't your thing, they have a variety of drinks that have caffeine without needing the bean. I've recently fallen for their Green Tea Frappuccino. It's made with matcha, a type of ceremonial green tea from Japan which has 10 times the antioxidants as regular green tea because it uses the whole leaf to make. Try it with a pump of raspberry syrup!

My Love Affair with Shoes


What is it about shoes that addicts me? Maybe its how they completely make an outfit, adding edge where needed or that needed pop of color. Maybe its how you feel when wearing them. Whatever the reason, I can't get enough and I'm not the only one.  This video from JCrew does a pretty good job of explaining it.

Cheers to the Bachelorette

The weekend before the bar exam, I found that I needed a little bit of a break from all the studying (you can only do 14 hour days for so long).  My good friend Jessica's bachelorette celebration was a perfect distraction.  We started out at her apartment before getting on the party bus, then drove around to some local wineries. Jessica is a huge fan of wine and this party was very "her." It was wonderful to let off a little steam with some great friends from high school :)

Garden of the Gods


A beautiful afternoon among the majestic Rocky Mountains just outside of Colorado Springs

It is not very difficult to ascertain as to why these trails are called the "Garden of the Gods," the view is awe-inspiring as you walk through a small valley between gorgeous peeks. My trip to Denver, CO had been plagued with several afternoon thunderstorms and I can't decide if we got lucky or if weather dared not spoil such a magnificent place, but it was a perfect afternoon. My friend Caitlyn, whom I was visiting, and I spent the late morning and early afternoon daring to climb upon the rocks and were pleasantly rewarded with an incredible view.
My family and I always visited Colorado during ski (or snowboard if you like) season, but it has always been a dream of mine to visit these wonderful mountains when they are covered in green instead of white! I had a fantastic week in probably one of the most beautiful places in the United States and I could not be more thankful!

A Little R and R

Happy Hump Day Everyone! 

And hello all who have seen this page! I've been a little behind my sisters in posting but I promise it's not because I don't love The Colorful Cardinal. Work has definitely been hectic this summer and between the long hours in my revolving office (I travel frequently for work) added together with all the festive summer activities I've let time get away from me! 

I want to tell all of you about my most recent trip to Denver to visit a couple of college friends, but before I do I wanted to give you a glimpse of the resort I'm taking Mary to this weekend! I have to be there for work but wanted to give Mary with a little R and R after all her hard work studying for the Bar.


Gosh, it can be so hard to work in paradise ;)

Flashback Friday

Hello All!


Sorry for the lack of posts this week, its been crazy busy.  Elise and Claire have been out of town and I spend all my time studying for the bar exam in 4 days.  Ahhhhhhhhh! Freaking out a little bit :)

Here is a little gem from Christmas a few years ago.  My aunt and uncle have a wonderful tradition where, instead of buying gifts for everyone, they leave clues around the house for all the cousins to figure out and the final clue lets us know what group activity we will be doing.  This is from our group scuba diving class.

#thinspo

While taking a break from working today, I came across an article talking about the fat v. skinny debate.  Like most people today, I felt the need to at least skim it to see what it had to say. Maybe from a need for affirmation about where I am or to find a new way to lose those last 3 pounds, either way, I didn't get what I expected. I learned a new word (phrase?).

#thinspo - Short for thin inspiration, it refers to photos, or phrases that inspire thinness.  

I googled it and was devastated by some of the things I saw.  Yes, it is important to live a healthy lifestyle.  Eating healthy food, working out and generally taking care of yourself are good things, but the sad part is, so many people sacrifice their well bring for a particular look.  Whether looking for the thigh gap or more prominent collarbones, people are turning to #thinspo to help remind them of their goal.  Here are some of the #thinspo images you can find.

I get it. The desire to be skinny.  I was a ballet dancer growing up, and staring at myself in a leotard and tights for hours a day never exactly helped me feel good about myself.  I always wished I was just a bit skinnier or one jean size smaller. Since stopping ballet, I keep in shape now with cycling and other various workouts. There is one thing I learned in my desire to stay fit, I will NEVER be a size zero.  I may be able to get to a size two, but that will likely require multiple hours a day of working out and a strict diet. Not exactly attainable, plus I love food too much. 

Do I still look at photos of skinny celebrities and wish I could look like them? Yes, of course.  But then I remember the teams of people they have to help them look a certain way, the wonders of photoshop and, even then, they might just be skinny and not healthy.  

Now, I realize some people are naturally skinny.  I have a few friends that happen to fall into that category and I in no way mean to shame them because of how they are. It is how they are made, naturally.  This post is for the majority of people who are not like that. I hope that your reaction to these #thinspo photos is the same as mine, one of disgust.  Starvation is not the answer, throwing up is not the answer and neither is abusing laxatives.  Stop saying "I want to be skinny" and say "I want to be healthy." While living a healthy lifestyle may earn you a thigh gap, don't have your goal be to have the thigh gap.

A Family Favorite


Mexican Tortilla Soup



I have had many types of tortilla soup before and in my mind, none compare to this recipe. All the veggies are cooked enough but still have some of their texture, the broth is to die for, and it can be easily adjusted for vegetarians. 

Ingredients

1 cup fresh corn kernels
2 tbsp sweet butter
5-6 cloves of garlic
1 cup of onion, diced
1 cup celery, diced
½ cup carrots, diced
½ cup Anaheim chile, seeded and diced (sub: canned, diced green chilies)
1 tbps ground cumin
1 ½ tbps chile powder
1 tsp oregano
1 ½ cup tomato, diced
1 quart (4 cups) chicken stock or water
1 bunch of cilantro, chopped
1 ½ cup cooked chicken, diced
¾ tbsp. salt
½ tsp fresh ground black pepper
2 cups tortilla or corn chips, broken into smaller pieces
1 avacado, diced (or guacamole)
1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated





First, melt butter in a large saucepan over moderate heat.  Add the garlic, onion, celery, carrots, corn and diced chilies and cook for three minutes.  I prefer raw corn kernels cut with a sharp knife off the cob, but thawed frozen corn or canned corn with no sugar or salt work too. Cut raw kernels off the corn cob with a sharp knife. Stirring the mixture occasionally until the onion is transparent. 



Second, stir in the cumin, chile powder and oregano. Continue stirring for another minute to toast the spices. 



Third, add tomatoes and cilantro. This is where you can adjust the recipe to suit your needs.  Claire is a vegetarian so the original recipe doesn't work for her, but there are so many great veggies in this that it would be terrible for her to miss out! I separated about half of the mixture into another sauce pan.  Then I added 3 cups of vegetable stock to her portion and 3 cups of chicken stock and the chicken to the other. I found that separated dish needed a little more broth than just the quart called for. If you are not dividing the vegetable/seasoning mixture into two, only 1 quart (4 cups) are needed. 



If you want to add more veggies to the vegetarian portion, now is a good time; summer squash, zucchini or black beans are perfect.  For the chicken, I took 3 medium sized raw chicken breasts diced them into two inch cubes. Then, I added the chicken to boiling water and let them cook for about 9 minutes.  I then cut the 2 inch sections into smaller cubes before adding them to the saucepan. If you want, you can boil whole chicken breasts, but I like to cut them a bit smaller so they cook more quickly.  I don't suggest anything smaller than the 2 inch size before boiling, because I find the chicken stays more moist that way.  Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Season the soup with salt and pepper.


            
To serve, ladle the soup into soup bowls and garnish each with first tortilla chips, cheese and a tablespoon of avocado/ guacamole. This is another point where you can adjust the recipe as needed.  For example, I don't eat food with gluten, so I use organic black bean chips or skip the cheese if you can't eat dairy. If you are a dairy lover and can't live without sour cream, you may also add that as part of the garnish.  My dad loves to add jalapeño to his. 

Yield: 6-8

Running on Empty

Post Workout Shake


This shake is designed to to give your body the essential nutrients you need after a hard workout! Each ingredient individually is great for after any work out, so feel free to have the ingredients together or separately! If you do not have or do not wish to buy Carnation Breakfast Essentials (Chocolate) feel free to substitute with organic chocolate milk (preferably skim).


To make this shake is incredibly simple! First, blend a banana, ice, milk, and Carnation Breakfast Essentials (Chocolate). Be sure to blend well to get rid of any chunks of ice or banana! Last add the peanut butter and yogurt! You can add more or less milk/ice in order to get a consistency that you prefer.


Note about the ingredients: I recommend Natural/Organic Peanut Butter over regular in order to avoid partially hydrogenated oils. Similarly, I suggest Greek Yogurt over normal yogurt, because Greek yogurt contains more protein and less sugar than normal yogurt!

Flashback Friday


Happy Friday Everyone!
